If you have decided to start your adventure of learning Spanish or if you are already on your way, you have probably heard that one of the best ways to improve your conversational skills is to simply talk more. However, we understand that it is not always easy to find that person who makes you feel comfortable and helps you improve your Spanish.
For this reason, in this post we want to share with you some tips that you can try for yourself and start improving your conversational skills.
1. Remember your why and the end goal.
One of the things we believe in is having a deep and sustainable desire to overcome all the obstacles that come with learning a new language. This will give you the strength you need to create the habit of continuing to learn even when you don’t feel totally motivated or eager to continue. Write down your why and put it in a visible place.
2. Learn how to talk to new people
It is very likely that you have had several different experiences meeting new people. For some, it is easy to make friends while for others it is almost mission impossible because of how awkward these events sometimes make us feel. If you belong to the second group, the best thing to do is to practice with people you know but don’t normally deal with much. Try to find moments where you can start a conversation, even if you don’t know them very well they are not complete strangers. Best of all, the language barrier won’t be a problem at first.
3. Do it often
It is very important to have a good organization of our time if we want to fulfill our daily goals and responsibilities. Be aware of the time you have available to schedule conversations with a Spanish partner and stick to them. The best way to become good, or better said, excellent at a skill is with constant and dedicated repetition.
4. Look for Spanish partners in your circle first
Before scheduling a conversation with a stranger through a social network or website, you can try looking first among people in your personal circle. Perhaps a cousin or friend has a connection with someone who speaks Spanish. Don’t be afraid to ask or try people close to you. They may surprise you.
5. Search for native speakers in your city
Nowadays, there are many websites that help people with similar purposes or tastes to meet in the same city. One of them is www.meetup.com which allows you to find people with the same interest in learning Spanish and organize meetings. This could lead you to meet people who have native Spanish speakers among their circle of friends and acquaintances. Another resource you can use is www.couchsurfing.com which allows you to host people from all over the world and stay for free on your couch or in your empty room at home. This way you can show them your city and culture while learning about them. And you can practice your Spanish from the comfort of your home.
