All things ever achieved were first thought out and defined in small steps. This applies to any goal you want to achieve, from playing an instrument, to running a marathon, to learning a second language.
The great Confucius once said that “a path of 1000 steps begins with a single step“. That first step should be the definition of your goal, why you want to achieve it and how you plan to do it. Otherwise, the path is unclear and it is easy to get lost.
We believe that people who decide to learn Spanish and fail or don’t manage to start is because they don’t know what Spanish means to them, what they want to learn, and they don’t have a motivating force to push them when the road gets tough.
For this reason, we believe the best thing to start with is asking these questions: What defines your path to Spanish? What do you want to do: order food and wine in restaurants? Or do you want to be able to have in-depth conversations with someone who doesn’t speak English? Being clear about what we want to achieve during our learning process is what motivates us to move forward regardless of the obstacles.
For example, let’s think for a moment about athletes. They spend countless hours in the gym training, recovering from injuries, suffering aches and pains due to the physical activities they must do every day. They don’t think about the long hours of fatigue and challenges, they focus on what they will achieve when their training is complete, on the glory that comes after so much hard work.
Similarly, people who dare to learn Spanish or another language, do not focus only on the conjugations and vocabulary to learn or the time it may take to reach a level of fluency that facilitates communication. The important thing is to focus on the things you are going to get after all your effort. The people, experiences and lessons that come from going to a new place and seeing a world totally different from your own.
So, where are you putting your attention?
We hope that you’ll find that special reason that motivates you on the days when you don’t feel like studying, on the days when everything seems to be going against you. Hold on to the good things that come your way and keep going!
